County Supervisors call for election to incorporate Tusayan on Nov. 3
Arguments ‘For’ and ‘Against’ accepted through Aug. 5

FLAGSTAFF - At their Regular meeting July 14, the Coconino County Board of Supervisors voted to call for an election for the community of Tusayan to consider incorporation as a town. The question for incorporation is scheduled for the Nov. 3, 2009 ballot.

The election will be conducted as an all "Vote by Mail" election unless a statewide special election is called for Nov. 3, thereby requiring that the election be conducted as a polling place election.

The ballot question is the result of the efforts of the group "United for Tusayan". In accordance with Arizona Revised Statutes, the group completed the required application and circulated petitions within the allotted time frame. On July 1, the group filed four petitions containing 42 signatures of registered voters within the proposed incorporated district. On July 9, County Recorder Candace Owens verified that 36 of the 42 signatures were valid.

This is the second time a group of citizens have put the incorporation question to voters. On Sept. 2, 2008, registered voters within the proposed boundaries voted down the incorporation question by a 78 to 62 vote.

As part of the process, arguments "for" and "against" the ballot question are being requested by Coconino County Elections for inclusion in the informational pamphlet. Any interested citizen or group may submit an argument. This pamphlet will be mailed to all registered households within the proposed boundaries.

Each argument must be 300 words or less and may be typed or handwritten. The argument must include the author's name, original signature, address and telephone number (address and phone number will not appear in the mailed informational pamphlet). A fee of $100 for paper submissions or $75 for a submission in a CD format is due and payable at the time of filing. A printed copy of the argument must be filed with the CD to comply with the original signature(s) requirement.

Arguments must be received by 5 p.m. on Aug. 5, in the Coconino County Elections Office, 110 E. Cherry Ave., Flagstaff, AZ, 86001.
