Forest Service closes roads temporarily
Closure due to wet weather

The Tusayan Ranger District of the Kaibab National Forest has temporarily closed many forest roads to vehicle access due to public safety and resource damage concerns. Almost all roads on the east side of State Highway 64 are closed to motorized travel.

The exception to the vehicle access closure on the east side of Highway 64 is the small area known as Lower Basin, which includes Forest Roads 6140 and 2818. Those two roads remain open. Also remaining open are all roads on the west side of Highway 64 including FR 328.

Many areas on the Tusayan Ranger District are saturated due to recent snow and rain. Motorists have encountered extremely hazardous driving conditions.

As soon as conditions improve, forest managers will lift the temporary motor vehicle restrictions, and the roads will be reopened to motorized travel.

Visitors to the area should contact the Tusayan Ranger District at (928) 638-2443 before traveling in order to verify weather and road conditions.

"At this time of year, things could be changing on a daily basis," said acting Tusayan District Ranger Linda Wadleigh. "We encourage visitors to use caution and also call ahead so they know what to expect."
