Stranded man rescued
Man living in vehicle snowed in
On Jan. 3 Coconino County Sheriff's deputies received a report of a man, who was living in his vehicle was stranded in deep snow on a dirt road located west of Bellemont.
Deputies learned the man was on Forest Service Road 9004, approximately one and a half miles west of the Pilot Travel Center in Bellemont. According to the reporting party, the man, who was living in his vehicle with a dog had no food supplies and was low on water and propane. Due to the deep snow pack and the man's medical history and physical condition, he was not able to hike to safety.
A Coconino County Sheriff's lieutenant, a deputy, and a Coconino County Sheriff's Search Rescue member responded to the area. Due to the deep snow pack the rescuers could not access the man's location with conventional vehicles. They were able to reach the man with the use of a four-wheel drive vehicle equipped with a rubber track conversion system (Mattracks).
Although the man was wet, very cold, and hungry he did not require medical attention. Deputies transported the man to Bellemont where he was met and cared for by a friend.
