What is recyclable?
Sometimes recycling can be confusing. At a recent public meeting, the conversation briefly turned to recycling. A few realized they were unknowingly contaminating their recycled items. The city of Williams has a recycling list on their Web site. Following is the list.
Recyclable materials -
Cardboard - Empty and flattened boxes. Please remove and discard styrofoam, packing peanuts and plastic wrap before placing cardboard in the recycling bin.
Paper - Magazines, newspaper, catalogs, white paper, color paper, strip cut shred paper, letters and junk mail. Please bag shredded paper in clear plastic bags. Cross cut shred paper is not accepted.
Steel and aluminum - Steel, tin and aluminum cans. Empty and clean paint and dry aerosol cans.
Paperboard - Dry food boxes, i.e. cereal, cake mix, cracker, beer and soda carriers, clean pizza boxes, shoe and shirt boxes. No waxed paperboard like frozen food boxes, produce, milk and juice boxes.
Plastics - All rigid plastics Nos. 1-7. These include all soda bottles, detergent, water, shampoo bottles, milk jugs, other plastic food containers and all lids (remove lids from bottles and place in the bin separately.) Plastic bags, plastic wrap and styrofoam are not accepted.
Glass - Do not mix glass with other recyclables. Glass can be dropped off at the Material Recovery Facility, 1800 E. Butler Ave., in Flagstaff. Glass recycling bins are available at various locations in Flagstaff. For a complete list of locations for glass recycling visit
www.flagstaff.az.gov/recycle.
Phone books - Can be recycled May 1-July 31 at the Materials Recover Facility in Flagstaff. Do not place phone books in bins with regular co-mingled recycling items.
To avoid contaminating your recycled items, keep the following items in the trash -
Plastic wrap, styrofoam, pet food bags, paper plates and cups, thermal paper, diapers, napkins, zip lock bags, sandwich bags, plastic sleeves (your newspaper comes in these!), excess food, grass clipping or yard waste, liquids, facial and toilet tissue and waxed paperboard.
