On May 25, a team of third, fourth and fifth graders from Grand Canyon will begin their journey to Ames, Iowa, to represent Arizona in the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals. Although Grand Canyon is one of the smallest schools in the state to compete in Odyssey of the Mind (OM), the team of Jasea Pace, Dominic Hodges, Josefina Legaspi, Kyla Pearce, Daniel Martin, Cree Watahamogie and Gabriel Abreu-Vigil placed first in regional and state competitions and earned the right to compete in the World Finals next month.

In OM, students must develop a creative solution to one of five problems and then present their solution (usually in the form of an eight minute performance) at the tournament. Students must also respond to a "spontaneous" problem on the day of the competition. It requires many hours of hard work by these students and lots of support and effort by their coaches and parents to get ready to compete.

Now they have another enormous task ahead. To get the team and its props and supplies to Ames, they'll need to raise about $12,000.

So far, they've managed to raise about $7,500 through donations and tax credits.

Many local organizations and businesses have already generously contributed but the OM team is still working to raise the rest of the money they need.

Those wishing to help can:

• Purchase refreshments sold at the South Rim Repertory performances on Friday and Saturday, May 8 and 9.

• Participate in the bowling fundraisers on Sunday, May 10, and Friday, May 15, from 12 - 6 p.m. Cost is $5 per game and shoes are free.

• Attend the Fly-In at the Grand Canyon Airport on Saturday and Sunday, May 16 and 17, where OM-ers will be selling hot dogs, hamburgers, smoothies and more.

• Come to the Yard Sale being held in the school's Multi Purpose Room on Saturday, May 23, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

• Make a tax credit donation to Grand Canyon Elementary School and indicate that the donation should be used for this year's OM team.

The Grand Canyon OM Team is proud to represent this community and appreciates any assistance in helping them get to Ames (and back again).
