Clean up Saturday
City to get makeover beginning at 9 a.m.

WILLIAMS - It's that time once again, where residents, community organizations and community-minded individuals chip in to help clean the community. The 2009 spring clean up day, organized by the Williams Clean and Beautiful Committee, will begin at 9 a.m. at the Williams and Forest Service Visitor Center, located at the corner of Railroad Avenue and Grand Canyon Boulevard. Coffee and pastries will be offered in the morning for those who participate in the clean up effort.

Pimi Bennett, Recording Secretary for the Williams Clean and Beautiful Committee, said she is excited about this year's outing.

"People can come in and sign up and they get their areas that they're going to be cleaning up," she said. "APS (Arizona Public Service) is going to be providing a beverage cup along the route. They're also providing the bags that will be used to pick up the trash with."

Bennett said that those who participate in the clean up might find a surprise or two along the way.

"Along the route, there's going to be some hidden Easter Eggs and inside the eggs are coupons. You turn that in and you can get a cash prize, $25, so the more trash you pick up the better chance to find those little eggs," Bennett said.

After the clean up, Bennett said participants would be invited back to the parking lot outside of the Williams and Forest Service Visitor Center for a barbecue beginning at noon.

"It's put on by the American Legion, they're going to do the cooking," Bennett said. "We're also very excited this year, because we're going to be offering, for sale at the sign-up area, rain barrels and compost bins. The rain barrels are $40 and the compost bins are $45. We're also going to be accepting batteries, car batteries, (regular) batteries. You can drop them off there so they can be properly taken care of. The Lion's Club is also going to be set up there. They're going to be collecting out-dated prescription medicines, so we're encouraging people to bring those as well. Terry Warnock will be demonstrating composting for those who don't know how to compost."

The Williams Clean and Beautiful Committee will also sponsor a free swim at the Williams Aquatic Center from 1-4 p.m.

There are a number of designated areas that are scheduled for cleaning during this year's clean up, according to Bennett.

"Rotary Club; they have their designated area like Glassburn Park, the area over by Jack in the Box, the Rodeo Grounds, those areas where a lot of that trash just collects," Bennett said. "We're encouraging everybody to get active in their neighborhoods and clean up."
