Editorial: Poor turnout at school board candidates' forum demonstrates apathy
The Williams Education Association hosted a school board candidates' forum Oct. 14. Three seats are up for grabs on the Williams Unified School District's Governing Board. Incumbent candidates running include David Nenne and Ron Stilwell. Challengers are Margaret Frances, David Miggins and Herman Nixon. Only David Nenne, David Miggins and Herman Nixon bothered to show.
The election is Nov. 4, and is an important one for the WUSD. The district is currently facing many issues. These critical issues include continuing declining enrollment and funding and the hiring of two key administrative positions - two principals. Current Williams High School Principal Steve Hudgens has been hired to serve as the new superintendent.
The poor turnout of candidates and taxpayers was shocking. None of the three key school administrators bothered to attend. Most of the audience - approximately 30 - consisted of WUSD employees.
The two-hour forum was not a complete loss. It was actually a good forum. The candidates that took the time to appear made a lot of good points. All three appear to have the best intentions for our school district and our children. However, we can't help but think that the two candidates that were no-shows could also be no-shows at school board meetings and other important school functions.
