Vikes take a hit
Boys lose in recent game

The Williams High School (WHS) Vikings didn't fare well during a recent away game March 19, one that took the Vikes to Bagdad. There the Vikes took another season loss, with a final score of Williams 1, Bagdad 2. Coach Phillip Echeverria said he knew the game would be a rough one for the Williams boys.

"I felt that would be our first test as a team and we came up a little short," Echeverria said. "We out-hit them. I think we had four hits - they had three hits. We gave up an unearned run. The first run, they scored one in the first and one in the fifth and the one in the fifth was unearned. The first inning run was somewhat unearned, but they did get it across."

The Vikes had seven errors to end the ballgame, most of them throwing errors, according to Echeverria.

"I think there were two fielding errors and five throwing errors and that hurt us defensively. We knew that we were going to face some people that would put the ball in play," Echeverria said. "This team put it in play and we just had trouble throwing it. It was a good test for us to prepare us for the competition we'll see in the state tournament, as long as we keep improving and getting better and taking care of our region games. Those are the ball games we're going to need to come out on top (of). We're going to need to hit the ball. We struck out 14 times in that game. Not putting the ball in play, you never test their defense. We didn't do that there, so we've got some work to do and we'll get better."

The junior varsity (JV) Vikings, meanwhile, fared better in their match against Bagdad March 19. The JV boys took the win with a final score of Williams 5, Bagdad 4. Echeverria said the boys swung the bats well in the game.

"We swung the bats a little better, put the ball in play, put a little pressure on them and we took a 5-2 run advantage into the bottom of the seventh inning and they scored two runs in that inning, but we ended up striking out the last guy to win that ball game. The JV team is coming a little ways. That's just their second game."

Currently the JV boys are 1 and 1 for the season. The Vikings varsity team is 8 and 2 overall and 1 and 0 in the region. The Vikes took on Northland Prep March 25 in the first WHS home game for the season. The Vikes will play a non-region game on Friday, as they travel for a varsity and JV game against Tonopah Valley. The Vikes game against Ash Fork, originally scheduled for Tuesday, has been moved to Monday, according to Echeverria.

The Lady Vikes, meanwhile, will play at Tonopah Valley on Friday and against Grand Canyon Saturday.
