The Lady Vikings aren't known as a tough team in the 1A division for nothing. The girls, as of March 10, stand undefeated in play since their first game of the season, which began for the girls Feb. 21 with a scrimmage against Camp Verde and a subsequent season opener against Salome Feb. 25.

The Lady Vikes took their first big win for the season with a final score of 18-1, Williams. The girls followed that win with another victory, this time against Sedona March 4. The Lady Vikes took the game with an ending score of Williams 10, Sedona 0.

The team took the show on the road recently, when they traveled to play in the annual Laughlin Cougar Classic Tournament March 7-8. Eureka took on the girls for the first game of the competition, though they failed to stop the tough Williams softball team. Final score for the game, after five innings, was Williams 12, Eureka 4.

The Lady Vikes went on to play Indian Springs next, playing three innings, and ending the game with a final score of Williams 15, Indian Springs 0. The wins continued for the Lady Vikes after their third game of the tournament, which saw the girls take on Laughlin High School. The match ended with a score of Williams 11, Laughlin 2.

"We were first place in our pool," Coach Ann Wells said. "The next day we played for pool play bracketing and every game was a must win."

The Ladies took on West Wendover March 8, taking the win with an ending score of Williams 11, West Wendover 1. The girls also took a strong win over Wells, winning the game with a final score of Williams 9, Wells 2.

"The last game for the championship was a real nail biter," Wells said.

The Ladies took on Virgin Valley, out of Mesquite Nevada, taking a close win with a final score of Williams 7, Virgin Valley 5.

"That was a tough game. It was very close," Wells said. "We were ahead 1-0 and then it was 3-0, then it was 6-1, then it was 6-2, then 7-2. Then in the bottom of the fourth inning, they had a girl hit a three-run homer. Then it was 7-5. It was a pretty close game. They were the home team, so we didn't score in the top of the fifth, because they were short games due to the tournament play. We play seven innings. We had two outs and they had a runner, they had a person hit to right field and got on and then they had a girl get up. She hit shortstop, a very strong hit ball and Kassie Pettit knocked it down and fell down in the process and the lead base runner tried to go between second and third and then when she saw Kassie was on the ground and had the ball, the girl tried to go back and she threw it to second base and tagged the girl out. It was very exciting."

Lady Vike Ashley Bean pitched the majority of the recent tournament, Wells said.

"Kassie Pettit has a sore arm. We also used Alma Hernandez for a few innings. Id' say that we had a very strong offense with good, solid hitting; good base running and we had a strong defense. All around we had some really good ball playing," Wells said.

"We had very good hitting overall by the members of the team. We'd only been outside to practice one day before we went to the tournament and I think we've got a lot of strong, experienced ball players, very talented, and they play very heads up. We haven't had really tough competition."

That could change, Wells said, once the girls take on some of the other teams in the 1A division. The girls faced Joe City March 11, which she said would prove to be tough competition for the girls this season. After Joe City, the Lady Vikes junior varsity squad will take on Grey Hills at Williams High School, with games beginning at 1 and 3 p.m. tomorrow.
