Fred "Perico" Avila smiles proudly at the cross he renovated just in time for the May 26 Memorial Day Service at the Williams Cemetery. Avila removed the cross two weeks prior to the service and finished it on the afternoon of May 25. The cross sits at the American Legion's plot and has for an unknown number of years. Avila - a member of the American Legion Cordova Post No. 13 for 43 years - has cared for the cross throughout the years. According to Avila, the cross was placed at the cemetery long before his time, and no one knows who created the cross or wrote the words. Avila and others are anxious to know the cross' origins. If you know who created the cross, e-mail us at editorial@williamsnews.com or mail your information to P.O. Box 667, Williams, AZ 86046.
