Eighth grader Sylvia Cardenas from the Williams Elementary-Middle School took home the first place prize in the girls' division Dec. 13. WEMS seventh grader Shean Ponce, who placed second in last year's tourney, took home the championship in the boys' division during this year's event. The two champions took part in the second annual Table Tennis Tournament held at WEMS.

Twelve players signed on for the recent tournament, according to school officials. While 2008 marked the second annual tournament, the Table Tennis Club has been active in Williams for the past three years. The group meets for two hours on Mondays and Wednesdays during the fall semester at WEMS.

Eighth grader Delaina Harris took home the second place trophy in the Dec. 13 event in the girls' division, while seventh grader Gabriel Chavez brought home the second place trophy for the boys'. Daniel Martinez took home the third place prize in the boys' division.

The Table Tennis Club utilizes four brand new tables for their games, according to school officials at WEMS. The tables were made possible through the school's SOAR program, as well as the site-based council, which oversees tax credit donation funds for the school. The tournament itself, according to school officials, was made possible through the help of volunteers and school supporters in the Williams area.
