Mixed weekend for soccer

Cuco Jaime is the team’s top scorer.

The Phantoms varsity soccer team won last Friday with a 3-0 shutout against Northland Prep Academy. Cuco Jaime scored two, one unassisted and the assist on the other by Temo Galicia. Daniel Celis scored one with Galicia assisting again.

They played a hard game but couldn't quite close the gap against Verde Valley School last Saturday, where the final score was 9-5. Jaime sank four goals unassisted and Galicia kicked in one with the assist by Celis.

With just 11 players, Head Coach Tom Bruno said endurance is the key training goal.

In addition to Jaime's goal scoring, Bruno said that freshman John Kissner deserves credit for limiting the damage in goal.

"He's just turning into a lion out there," he said. He also praised Daniel Trenchard for his strength on the defensive line and Celis for maintaining a good forward pace. Tendo Jaime is showing some of his brother's ability and is a versatile player everywhere he's put.

The Phantoms play this Friday in Chino Valley and at Camp Verde on Saturday.
