Share joy by volunteering and giving what you have

Aseason of celebration is here. Williams is known as a generous community and generosity is abundant throughout the year. A little more than a month of 2007 remains and there are several opportunities to share your personal joy by giving small amounts of time and resources to those in need.

Williams Lions Club members are busy organizing the Toys for Tots project in Williams. Toys will remain locally and will be distributed to children who might not otherwise have Christmas presents. Cards can be found on Christmas trees at National Bank of Arizona, the Williams Ranger District office and the Christmas Tree Gallery. Anyone wishing to provide a toy for a child can select a card from a tree, purchase a toy suitable for the child selected, wrap the gift and return it to the business where they were selected. Cash donations and unwrapped gifts are also welcome. Williams Lions Club members will deliver the gifts to children's homes before Christmas.

Anyone that is aware of any child age 12 or under that should be included in Toys for Tots can contact Lion Edie Phillips at 635-4784 with the child's name, age, sex and address so that they may be added to the list.

Another opportunity to help those in need this holiday season with just a small amount of time is ringing the bell for the Salvation Army. Williams Salvation Army representatives are asking for volunteers to ring the traditional holiday bell at select locations throughout town. Proceeds fund the Salvation Army's temporary emergency help programs in Williams and this year funds are low. If the Salvation Army has ever assisted you, ringing the bell for a few hours would be a great way to re-pay this non-profit organization.

To volunteer your time, contact Carol Glassburn at 635-4503. If you don't have time to volunteer, show your generosity by dropping some change into the volunteers' buckets.

ESA needs addresses for all area servicemen and women for the annual mailing of the Christmas boxes. The boxes will be mailed this week. Addresses are needed as soon as possible so ESA members can determine how many boxes to fill. The ESA Sorority is also seeking donations for items within the boxes such as candy, cookies, shampoo, lotions, jerky, peanuts, magazines, paperback books, trail mix, dried fruits, CD's of any kind, powdered Gatorade or any other appropriate material. The ESA typically prepares about 40 boxes for our local servicemen and women overseas and in the United States, which costs approximately $700 to mail.

If you have items to donate or want to help with postage, contact Dorothy Miller at 635-4330. Let's all help in letting our troops know we are thinking about them.

The Williams Food Bank is seeking donations of necessary food items for Christmas food boxes. Turkeys, stuffing, canned fruits and vegetables, dessert mixes, coffee or any other appropriate foods are being thankfully accepted now through the holiday. Items may be donated at 200 S. Ninth St. in the community room. Monetary contributions are tax deductible and also appreciated. To make a donation or to find out more, call Guy Mikkelsen at 635-2913.

We urge you to share your joy this holiday season by donating your time and resources to these valuable volunteer groups that provide many services not only during the holidays, but also throughout the year. We appreciate all that these service groups and volunteers do. When you see them, spread more joy by telling them, "Thank you."
