Pete Gonzales and Lorenzo England of Phoenix divided honors of being the first to bag a bear during the 1943 hunting season. The pair was hunting the south slopes of Williams Mountain when they ran into a young black bear. Both jerked their guns up and fired. An examination showed that both shots had found their mark, so they split the honors and the bear, Mr. Gonzales taking the meat and Mr. England the hide. The bear dressed about 175 pounds.
