John Ivens Post plans Memorial Day event
The American Legion, John Ivens Post #42 will hold their annual Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, at 11 a.m. at the Grand Canyon Cemetery. Along with paying tribute to veterans who have passed, the post will also dedicate a new gate that was more than 10 years in the making.
Speaking will be park Superintendent Stephen Martin and Post 42 Commander Scott Miller.
According to Mary Hoover of the Post 42 Auxiliary, the original gate was erected by the post and dedicated on Memorial Day 1928. Time and a backhoe mishap led to its deterioration. Post 42 members Buford Belgard and Al Richmond led the effort to have it replaced.
The restoration was done in two phases, each subject to historical review. A reconstructed framework was dedicated on Memorial Day 2003. The gate itself will be dedicated on Monday. Hoover said the work was done by a specialist with the Park Service.
About 60 veterans are buried at Grand Canyon Cemetery.
