While many students complete the school year with thoughts of vacation, a summer job or just hanging out for a while, Grand Canyon graduate Jolene Tisi joined more than 40 students who committed to a different plan.

Through a summer program funded by the Coconino Association for Vocations, Industry and Technology (CAVIAT), they instead earned career and technical education credits for courses of study that included welding, automotive and culinary arts. Tisi participated in a Certified Nursing Assistant course offered in partnership with Coconino Community College.

The program was coordinated by the Flagstaff Unified School District (FUSD) and Career and Technical Education director Doug Allan. This was the first year these classes were offered to students throughout Coconino County.

The CNA class was five weeks long, including classroom and clinical instruction where the students earned one high school CTE elective credit and five community college credits. They are also eligible to take the state certification test. The CNA class was so popular that the process became very selective and generated a waiting list of students trying to get into the class. Only 10 were accepted. Students studying welding, automotives and culinary arts attended for four weeks, a total of 120 hours, earning one high school CTE elective credit and up to two community college credits.

The final day of instruction was Friday, July 6.

"We are very encouraged about growing the program next summer", said Christine Mayer, CTE Program Coordinator for CAVIAT. "Next year, we hope to have even more students participate from the outlying areas that don't have an opportunity to take these classes. We hope to offer housing so they won't have to commute or find their own housing, like they all did this year."
