Old Man Winter has caused the reshuffling of some recent games on the Williams High School Vikings varsity and JV basketball team schedules, but that didn't stop the boys from securing two more conference wins.

On Jan. 12, the Vikes took advantage of the home court and ground down Rough Rock to a 78-61 victory.

A quarter-by-quarter score shows Williams on top in all but the fourth period. For points, Ronaven Warren was in the lead with 19, followed by both Derek Gauna and Jake MacDonald ‹ each with 16 ‹ while Abel Valdez showed hustle with 10 assists and three steals.

The Jan. 13 Red Mesa game was rescheduled for Jan. 31 due to inclement weather.

In the meantime, your varsity Vikes jumped out to a 26-8 lead by the end of the first quarter and defeated the Valley Sanders Pirates by a score of 71-52 on Jan. 19.

MacDonald ‹ who also contributed with nine rebounds and three blocked shots ‹ was leading scorer for the Vikes with 14 points. Teo Toernqvist had a double-double, scoring 12 and bringing down 15 rebounds while Warren scored 10 and had five assists.

Gauna scored 10 to go along with his four rebounds and three blocks; Abel Valdez scored eight points and had five assists while Zach Langston scored six points and came up with four steals.

The recent wins brings your varsity Vikes to a record of 6-1. On an even better note, players MacDonald and Valdez are now ranked as the second and third highest scorers for the season in the 2A North region with 272 and 250 points, respectively.

The Jan. 20 St. John's game has been bumped to Feb. 5 and the Vikes took on Camp Verde again yesterday.

On the JV side, only one game has been played by that squad due to bad weather ‹ an on-the-road 53-44 loss to Valley Sanders Jan. 19.

JV Coach Tristan Heisley said that despite the loss, the game was a good one for the younger boys as they had lost by 20 to Valley sanders earlier this season. Robbie Puga was credited with the most points with 14 while Gabe Castaneda also chipped in with eight.

The Vikings' next game will be at home against Many Farms Friday with JV at 4 p.m. and varsity at 7 p.m.
