JV boys gain experience, wins
With the boys' varsity basketball team on a three-game winning streak and the girls' varsity winning two in a row, the boys JV Phantoms were not to be outdone, winning two games over the last week.
The baby Phantoms started with a hard fought 32-25 win over the Ash Fork Spartans on Friday night.
Trailing by 3 points at the end of the third quarter, Noah Aspaas came off the bench and hit two key 3-point baskets to spark a 9-2 fourth quarter run that gave the young Phantoms the lead and the win. Aspaas finished with a season high 10 points, freshman Cuco Jaime also had 10 points and Dan Celis chipped in 9.
On Saturday afternoon, Cuco Jaime scored a career high 21 points and Cruz Caballero contributed 10 points as the Phantoms defeated a stubborn Shonto Prep team 57-44. Caballero was also the leading rebounder with 7.
Carlos Savaadra made his home debut by chipping in 5 points and looking very polished despite missing the first semester of the season.
"I am pleased with the effort of the team, but have concerns over the number of layups and easy baskets they missed," said JV Head Coach Greg Walker. "If we had converted half of the inside shots and layups we missed we would have won both games by a wider margin.
"We also shot poorly at the free throw line going 16-36 in the two games, and that is usually a lack of concentration.
"This is a much younger team than we have had in past seasons so hopefully as they go through the growing pains they will get better." Walker added.
