Letter to the Editor

To the editor:

First, on behalf of the Task Force, I would like to thank all the people that have supported our efforts and for those who took the time to comment and to attend our various community meetings. Also thank you to Jackie for her many articles to help keep the community informed about this important issue.

In reviewing last week's article, I wanted to clarify a couple of items that were close but not quite on track. First, if we did incorporate, neither of our special districts, Fire or Sanitary, would have to be dissolved. Those would be decisions that would be made by both the city and the districts themselves.

If the decision was made to do so, there is a defined process to follow and it would require an attorney for guidance. Regarding the population census being challenged, whoever challenged the accuracy of the Federal Census would then need to pay for another census to prove it was in error, not the community. Next, regarding the size of the first council, it would be five members not seven, due to our population size.

While at the end of the article I was accurately quoted to say "if you don't own anything, you can't be part of an overall decision-making process," it leaves the impression that only ownership gives rights to be a part of the process. That is not what should be taken away from the discussion. Renters and homeowners have the same opportunity to be a viable and important part of a city or community.

As residents it should be your community and reflect your desires and image, as well as those of the landowners and businesses. My point was intended to be that we currently have a minimal sense of roots, since we all live in company housing and our housing is tied to our employment. A sense of freedom from that can bring an opportunity to help create a feeling of true community and roots. Ownership or simply housing freedom of choice can help bring those feelings of belonging and participation in developing your community.

Thanks again to Jackie for all of her coverage and support. It is tough to get it all down and concisely presented. I think she does a great job.

Respectfully,

Greg Bryan
