August 27, 1942

• All local bars voluntarily remained closed Sunday. The step was taken by the local businessnmen as a step toward decreasing the list of absentees among the Navajo Munitions Depot workers on Monday and Tuesday. It seems that many of the workers were unable to get back on the job on Monday after a free weekend.

The bars will not close Labor Day weekend when the rodeo is in full swing, as most rodeo hands need an occasional lift in order to undertake some of their reckless stunts.

August 29, 1957

• The judging for rodeo queen will take place tomorrow at the rodeo grounds. The contestants include Peg Van Brunt, Sandra Gibbs, Arlyn Cureton, Nancy Storms and Betty Duffield. These charming girls will be judged, not only for beauty, but also for their personalities and riding ability.

August 31, 1972

• Labor Day rodeo queen candidates include Nancy Hunsaker, Michelle Dunagan and Karen Perkins. A queen will be crowned Saturday night during the barn dance at the rodeo grounds.
