Body discovered below North Rim
Last week, rangers recovered the body of a 36-year-old Florida woman from approximately 300 feet below the rim at Walhalla Overlook on the North Rim. She was identified as Claudia Ramirez of Lake Worth.
Her body was discovered Monday, Aug. 21 at about 4:30 p.m. during helicopter reconnaissance of the North Rim to monitor the Roosevelt Fire. It was determined at that time that the victim had suffered fatal injuries. An unattended rental car, believed to be that of the victim, was located in a parking lot at Walhalla Overlook.
The recovery took place the next day. Due to hazardous terrain and significant risk of rock fall, the body was recovered using a helicopter short haul insertion and extraction operation. The operation involved suspending rangers from a 150-foot line and inserting them into the work area to complete scene investigation and recovery of the body. Following helicopter extraction of the body, rangers were extracted from the scene.
The body was taken to the South Rim helibase and then transferred to the Coconino County Medical Examiner's Office in Flagstaff. The Park Service in investigating.
