Obituary

Kathryn M. Massey

Kathryn M. Massey, 98, a long time resident of Williams, died Sept. 17, 2006.

She was born Feb. 7, 1908 near Hamlin, Kan. on a farm. She was left an orphan by her mother, Lula Bell Lofer (Harding) at age seven and was cared for by relatives and friends. At age 16, she became a Harvey Girl and moved to Williams in 1927.

In 1937 Don and Kathryn owned a ranch in Pittman Valley. In typical Kathryn style, she had a large garden, raised livestock and fowl, living a hard, self sustaining life. She supplied food for lots of people. Don also worked road construction and at many military bases.

They sold the ranch in 1945 and Don became police chief in Williams. Kathryn went back to work for the Harvey system and other western resorts as a waitress. They remarried in 1977, enjoying gardening, traveling and church work. Don passed on in February 1997. Kathryn made, loved and cherished her many Williams friends. Her friends and caretakers made it possible for her to be independent and live in her home until 2005.

She is survived by a son and step daughter, Wayne and Louise Massey; granddaughters Laura (Rich) Miller and Kathy (Charlie) Brown; great-grandchildren Avery and Austin Miller, all of Tucson; and stepsons Brad Massey of Williams and Steven (Janice) Massey of Niceville, Fla.

Her funeral was held at 1 p.m. Sept. 23, 2006 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Interment followed at the Williams Cemetery. She was buried next to her beloved husband.
