Protect your home from wild fire by creating defensible space

Earlier this spring fire experts spread warnings that the significant lack of precipitation this winter led to extremely low mountain snow pack, creating very bad fuel conditions. Fire season was expected to begin early. Since then we have received much needed precipitation. Was it enough? Fire experts say that fire season will still occur, only a little later than previously expected.

Firefighters might not be getting much rest this summer should these predictions hold true. If there is even a slight chance that your home could one day be in the path of a wildfire, now is the time to prepare and safeguard your home. It is your responsibility to make sure your home is as defensible against wildfire as possible. Once a fire breaks out, it is usually too late to create defensible space.

Residents are encouraged to make fire preparedness part of their spring-cleaning routine. By clearing dead brush, dry grass and other flammable materials from around your home, you will create a survivable space. Simple steps taken now can save property and lives during a wildfire. The following tips were provided by Firewise:

• Stack firewood, lumber, or other combustible materials at least 30 and preferably 100 feet away and uphill from structures.

• Inspect your chimney at least twice a year, clean it at least once a year.

• Clean leaves and needles off your roof.

• Use care when disposing of ashes. Use only metal containers with lids when getting rid of ashes.

• Store gasoline, oil rags, and other flammables in approved safety cans.

• Install and learn to use fire extinguishers.

• Clear a 10-foot area around propane tanks and barbecues.

• Mow grass, cut weeds and brush frequently.

• Keep vacant lots cleared of all flammable vegetation.

• Follow all local burning/open fire regulations.

• Have garden hoses long enough to reach any area of your home/buildings, and keep shovels, rakes and buckets, close at hand in case of fire.

• Make sure your address is clearly marked and visible.
