Both the Williams High School Vikings and Lady Vikings baseball/softball teams met up with one of the powerhouses of the state 2A schools ‹ Northwest Christian ‹ on the road March 18.

Despite the best efforts of our girls and boys, Northwest Christian came away with wins on all four games.

"They were very powerful offensively," said Lady Vikings Head Coach Ann Wells. "That team was state runner up last year."

Wells reflected what many 2A public schools are having to deal with these days ‹ that the state's 2A field is being dominated more and more by private schools.

In their first game, pitched by Michelle Sandoval, the Lady Vikes went all six innings, but couldn't put a runner across the plate against the opposition, losing 10-0. One base hit was successfully smacked in by Jenise Pettit.

The second game, pitched by Kassie Pettit, produced a nearly duplicate 10-0 loss for our girls.

Though coming home without a win, Wells said she was happy to have the team compete in pre-season against a stronger school for conference-time preparation and that the losses weren't necessarily the fault of errors against the Lady Vikes, but due rather to a simply overpowering opponent.

For the boys, it was almost the same story.

"It's always a great experience to go up against a stronger competitor," said Vikings Assistant Coach Patrick Henson. "We pretty much knew we were going to get beat going in, but as a team, we're hitting above 300, which is a good measure that we can compete."

The first contest was a 17-1 loss for the varsity team. The second game produced a 16-8 loss for the JV squad, but at least one bright moment came out of it ‹ the first home run of the boys' season was knocked in by Jake MacDonald.

The Vikings were scheduled to play Chino Valley on the road yesterday, while the Lady Vikes were scheduled to play them at home. On Friday, support your Vikings and Lady Vikings by attending home games against Fredonia, starting at 1 p.m.
