Girls take Laughlin championship
The Williams High School Lady Vikings varsity softball team is celebrating a championship week.
On March 7, the girls took a win over Sedona on the road, 14-4.
Michelle Sandoval pitched the whole five-inning contest with five strikeouts. Amanda Bean racked up two singles, a double and a triple with three runs batted in while Kassie Pettit had a single and a double. Crystal Berry smacked in two singles and a triple for another two RBIs.
"We were doing very well with our bats," Head Coach Ann Wells said. "We had 15 hits for the day."
The Lady Vikes JV team celebrated as well, coming from behind to beat Sedona in their very first outing.
Then it was on to the annual Laughlin tournament where your Williams Lady Vikings came home as first-place champions.
In the first game on March 10, the varsity girls beat the Laughlin team, 10-0, in three innings.
Sandoval pitched the game with four strikeouts and three walks. Jenise Pettit received big kudos for knocking in a grand slam homerun.
The next game on March 10 was a close one against West Wendover and it was another win for the Ladies, 8-7.
The girls were ahead by 8-3 in the fourth inning. In the bottom of the fifth, however, Wendover managed to get another four runs, but catcher Crystal Berry clinched the win by tagging a player for the final out at home plate.
"Crystal Berry got the tag at home plate for the last out, and that made it a very exciting game to watch," Wells said, adding that Berry has so far been the teams most consistent hitter.
In the third game for March 10, the Lady Vikes were pitted against the Wells, Nev., team after the team they were originally supposed to play was a no-show. It was the Wells team the girls lost to last year to come in second.
Unfortunately, the girls lost 8-3, but it didn't stop them from taking the tournament.
On March 11, the girls won over Lake Mead 8-1 in a fabulous no-hitter pitched by Sandoval, who delivered five strikeouts.
In the final championship game, the Lady Vikings played Laughlin, who had beat Wells, again and took the whole enchilada by winning 9-4.
Sandoval once again pitched the whole five innings with seven strikeouts, only four hits against her and a one-run home run. Berry hit a triple as did Jenise Pettit.
Wells said that she was proud of her team's fielding and hitting efforts and that the tournament was perfect preparation for the upcoming conference season.
"We were all very happy to win the championship," Wells said.
The girls play Northwest Christian in their first home game of the season on Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m. and will have another against Chino Valley on March 28 at 2 p.m. for varsity and 4 p.m. for JV.
