Vikings win one, lose one in preparation for Pinon
Vikings hopeful for homecoming game with Pinon
The Williams High School Vikings varsity football team is coming off a 1-3 season so far as they prepare for Friday's homecoming battle against 1-4 Pinon.
The Vikes came away with their first victory of the regular season on Sept. 16 against Many Farms 38-7.
"I think we're continuing to do some things well," said Vikes Head Coach Rick Shipley about this year's younger squad. "Overall, we played better as a team."
Shipley highlighted the efforts of running back Lucas Zabala and quarterback Jake MacDonald in that game. Zabala landed himself four touchdowns before suffering an ankle injury in the second half and it was running back Jonah Kurtz who scored the game's final TD.
On Sept. 23, the Vikings lost to conference favorite St. John's 6-44.
"I was happy with some of the things we did," Shipley said. "We were able to take the ball down and score against some of their best kids."
The game's only Williams TD was gained from a four-yard MacDonald pass to No. 10 Terin Agee in the endzone.
As the boys prepare to fire it up with Pinon, Shipley says the most important aspects the team must work on right now is their special teams, such as those used in the punt or punt return.
Meanwhile, the JV squad stood still on two games it was supposed to play against Mayer yesterday and on Sept. 13 as Mayer forfieted those two. The JV Vikings will have a reschedule match against Mayer Saturday at 2 p.m. in Williams.
The homecoming contest against Pinon ‹ whose own coach, Orvel Curns, is looking for more consistency from his team ‹ is scheduled for 7 p.m. on the Williams home field Friday.
The WHS staff and athletic department is asking parents to please watch their kids around the stadium and parking lot area during games. Though many vehicles are parked while their drivers watch the games, there is still a high amount of traffic in the area.
