The varsity Lady Vikings showed great improvement and promise at their latest games ‹ the annual Bourgade Tournament at Phoenix Country Day School.

The Williams High School Lady Vikings volleyball team has already gotten some serious play early in the season.

On Sept. 6, the girls traveled to Valley Sanders for one JV match and two varsity matches. The JV team lost in two, but Coach Kristi Fredrickson says not to worry.

"Their youth came out," Fredrickson said. "They'll be getting better and better having now played a conference game."

The varsity Ladies played two three-game matches and won in the first with scores of 21-25, 25-21, and 25-11.

Coach Ken Edes offered accolades to players Amanda Bean and Chesney Grantham for doing well on serves, with Grantham getting 11 points from serves in the second game.

In the second match, the Lady Vikes won the first game 21-20 with Jessica Scott contributing heartily at the serve line. The second game was a 25-12 loss for the girls, who then battled back for a nail-biter in the third.

That game was tied at several times right up until the 25th point. Unfortunately, the girls lost in sudden death style when Valley Sanders came back to score the last two points for a 27-25 loss.

"We've got a lot to work on," Edes said, citing the problem again of having the team caught out of position and not being where they needed to be on the court defensively. "They're young, but they learn, they listen and a lot is just them playing as a team and trusting each other."

On Sept. 9-10, the girls traveled to Phoenix Country Day School for the annual Bourgade tournament.

Sept. 9 matches included a three-game loss to 4A Dysart with scores of 22-25, 25-22, and 13-15, where the Ladies were simply out-manned by a bigger team.

Next was the 5A Tolleson match, which the girls lost in two with scores of 21-25 and 15-25.

"We struggled," Edes said. "We couldn't get our serves in, although Kassie Pettit did serve well."

The same day, the Ladies also played Scottsdale Christian, but lost in two again with scores of 13-25 and 16-25.

The losses bumped Williams into the silver division the next day for single eliminations. First up was a winning match in three games against the Phoenix Christian Cougars with scores of 21-25, 25-19, and 15-5.

Edes said Breanne Schulte had tremendous blocks and hailed the efforts of Kassie Pettit and Alyssa Dennison.

Another win ‹ this one against home team Phoenix Country Day ‹ delighted the Lady Vikes with scores of 25-17, 6-25, and 15-9. Edes explained that the second game was tough because the opposing team's server got 11 points right off the bat.

That brought the girls to the silver division championship game versus Dysart. Unfortunately, the girls fell victim to the 4A school with scores of 20-25, 19-25, and a tie in the middle game of 18-18.

"We saw a lot of improvement this weekend," Edes said, citing that out of 16 teams, 10 were much bigger 4A and 5A schools. "The girls had an opportunity to step up their level of play, and I think they did."

The Lady Vikes' next outing is a home court match against Many Farms on Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m. with JV at noon and 2 p.m.
