Memorial service is planned today for local woman
A memorial service is planned today at 1 p.m. at the Grand Hotel for Grand Canyon resident, 44-year-old Toni Lucario, who died in Flagstaff on Sunday, Oct. 8. The service will include the planting of a tree in Lucario's memory by the sun porch behind the hotel, where she worked as director of sales and marketing since July of 2003.
Lucario's funeral is this Saturday at 10 a.m., at Lindale Baptist Church in her home town of Corpus Christi, Texas.
According to Rebecca Southard of the Grand, in lieu of flowers, a trust fund will be established for Lucario's three children 11-year-old Kuinn McMurtry, 13-year-old Teal McMurtry and 15-year-old Jake McMurtry. The youngsters attended Grand Canyon School last year and currently live with their father in Charlston, W. Va.
Southard said Lucario's co-workers are struggling with a sense of grief and loss, compounded by inaccurate accounts of how she died. It was reported that she was climbing out of a window at the Weatherford Hotel in downtown Flagstaff when she fell to her death, but Southard said the surveillance tape showed that she fell after leaning out too far.
"She wasn't out climbing," she said. "That wasn't who she was. On the surveillance tape it looks like she opened a window. It was just a tragic accident. She was a very special person to all of us."
Southard said information on the children's trust fund will be released when arrangements are finalized.
