Closures set on North Rim, North Kaibab

The North Rim Visitor Center closes at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22. Regularly scheduled ranger-led programs, as advertised in The Guide are offered through Oct. 14.

Advanced campground reservations for the North Rim Campground will be taken through Oct. 21.

A limited number of campsites with limited services will be available on a first-come, first-served basis until snow closes Highway 67. Hikers and cross-country skiers may use the park's group campsites throughout the winter with a permit through the Backcountry Information Center, or at the Visitor Center desk at Pipe Springs National Monument.

Overnight accommodations, the service station and related visitor services close before noon on Oct. 22. The last meal served at the Grand Lodge will be breakfast. Mule rides end tomorrow. The Kaibab Lodge, four miles from the park, will be closed after breakfast on Nov. 3, at 10 a.m. The Country Store outside the park will remain open until mid-November, then closes until mid-May. The Kaibab Plateau Visitor Center at Jacob Lake is now open only on weekends.

Arizona Department of Transportation officials have assured the park staff that Highway 67 into the North Rim will remain open to public travel through Nov. 15, but cautioned that after that, the road could be closed for the season on short notice due to major storms and heavy snowfall.

Visitors are encouraged to call 638-7870 in advance of their trip to check on the status of the highway.

From Oct. 22, until final closure of State Highway 67, only emergency services will be provided by the NPS.
