Vikings grind up Rough Rock<br>

Running back/defensive back Chance Grantham, No. 21, at left, with help from RB/DB Mark Pixley, No. 23, in back-ground, takes the ball 80 yards for a touchdown off a kickoff return in the Sept. 23 62-0 victory over the not so tough Rough Rock.

With 4:45 left in the first quarter, the score was 34-0 and the Vikes had only made five offensive plays. Grantham had another two rushing TDs, while No. 30 Mano Zabala, No. 36 Nicolas Padilla, and No. 9 Brent Sutton each had one of the same.

In last week’s issue of the News, Head Coach Rick Shipley said even though they’re winning, the team still needed to work on areas such as kicking before they’d be ready to take on tougher opponents.

Now a week later, Shipley says the team is improving. But while winning is always a good thing, both players and coaches would at least like to have some competition so the Vikes can prepare for a truly tough competitor such as St. Johns — a powerhouse state playoff nemesis of the Vikes for the past 10 years.

“Again, we’re looking at improvement even though the scores are lop-sided, because St. Johns is coming for the homecoming game,” Shipley said.

This Friday, the Vikings gear up for an away game at Many Farms at 7 p.m., then it’s on to the traditional Homecoming rivalry game against St. Johns in Williams at 7 p.m.

On a side note, resident and local Vikings fan Jeff Wright is asking for all attendees to the Homecoming game to wear black in support of our boys on the field. He is also asking parents and friends of players to join him in the loud section of the bleachers to help cheer the team on.
