School seeks to boost parental attendance<br>
This sign, posted outside third-grade teacher Jeanne Yost’s room, says it all.
The focus of the membership drive is to let parents know there’s a place for everyone in the organization.
“People think we’re here to tell them what to do and what activities to get involved with,” Martin said. “But we want people who are interested in getting involved and helping to start and run new programs.”
The PTA primarily focuses on needs for grades kindergarten through eight, though they do provide some support for the high school. Longtime programs include Meet the Teacher and Meet the School Board Candidates nights, Family Game Night, TV Free Week, Teacher Appreciation Week and Literacy First. The group also provides financial support for the Challenger Space Program, Artist in Residence Program and other special education programming. And, it’s also a source of volunteers for in-school programs like Classroom Parents.
While members must pay $5 in dues to vote on policies and on how donation money is spent, anyone can attend meetings and speak on issues, as well as attend any PTA function. This year, Martin said she would like to see programs grow to become real community events.
“We want to expand PTA Game and Family night and maybe invite other clubs,” Martin said. “It would offer a meal and a chance to get families together.”
PTA meetings are held on the first Monday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at Grand Canyon School. For more information, contact Martin at 638-0740.
