Concerned folks made a difference

To the editor:

This letter of thanks is late in coming. I would like to thank the concerned customers of the Sultana when they realized a dog had been locked up out on the side of the building for over 24 hours. The dog’s owners had been hauled off over domestic violence on Friday. Knowing the dog had no food, no water, no exercise and no fresh air as the windows weren’t left open even a little, they came over to the rabies clinic and asked if I could help.

I went down and the dog was definitely showing signs of stress. We took up a collection from the customers and had a locksmith come by and undo the locks.

This dog was so glad to have a group of helpful humans around. The people at the Sultana fed her, loved on her, took her for a walk and made a better bed for her in her owner’s truck. They had a plan to check on the dog until evening, where then she was going to spend the night in a loving home. Unfortunately, the authorities, having learned the dog was free, confiscated her immediately and stuck her in the city dog pens.

I appreciate the good people of the Sultana for rallying and trying to make a better situation for a dog who had no other help. It was refreshing to know someone else cares instead of just dumping problems on me. They were always afraid that a good deed would be written up by the authorities, turned around and they would be in trouble. It would also be nice if the owners were advised of the community act. They may have offered to reimburse them.

Second, I would like to thank Manual Luna and Margaret Steelman for their requests that money go to WAAG. Both of these people were excellent animal people and always willing to reach out and save. Margaret spayed and neutered the strays in her neighborhood. Everyone complained about the cats, but never offered to get involved. Margaret did!

So thank you, people, for caring. I see the difference when you do.

Kudos to students for walk-a-thon

To the editor:

The Howe and Martinez family would like to thank the Williams High School government class for all of their hard work in organizing the walk-a-thon for Klarisa. We would also like to sincerely thank the teachers, students and everyone who walked or made donations throughout our wonderful community. Thank you to Ray Reyes and Mike Russell of High Country Market for donating the ice.

A very special thank you goes out to the Mikkelsen family for their dedication to the walk-a-thon and their tireless efforts to make it a success. We appreciate your thoughtfulness and compassion more than you will ever know.

Klarisa has fought valiantly against this disease and we believe with all our hearts that she will be a survivor. She will continue to receive chemotherapy at the Phoenix Children’s Hospital until October 2005 and is currently down to once per month. All donations will be used for these monthly trips to Phoenix.

The generosity of this community has been overwhelming and we will never be able to thank everyone enough for their support. Please accept our heartfelt “thank you” and keep praying for Klarisa’s complete recovery, those prayers are definitely working.

Enjoy improved Dogtown area

To the editor:

We are pleased to invite you to the newly renovated Dogtown Lake Campground and Picnic Area Open House being held Friday from 1-3 p.m.

In the summer and fall of 2004, the Dogtown Lake Campground underwent renovation. Roadways were resurfaced, toilet buildings were replaced, and new picnic tables and fire rings were installed. Improvements were made to the campground, picnic area, day-use group site, overnight group site, host site, amphitheater, and the Forest Service Road (FR 140) accessing the campground. During the renovation process, the campground was closed to the public.

During the May 21 open house, Forest Service staff will be present to provide short tours of the campground and answer questions. We will also have a special appearance by Smokey Bear between 1-2 p.m.

We also want to invite you to spend some time on the Kaibab National Forest this summer. On the Williams and Tusayan Ranger Districts, we have five great campgrounds from which to choose. All offer relief from the summer heat, beautiful scenery and fun recreational opportunities.

Kaibab Lake, Dogtown Lake and White Horse Lake campgrounds charge $12 per site per night. Cataract Lake charges $8 per site per night, and Ten-X Campground charges $10 per vehicle per night.

Reservations for the group areas at Kaibab Lake, Dogtown Lake and White Horse Lake campgrounds can be made by calling Reserve America at (877) 444-6777. Reservations for the group area at Ten-X Campground can be made by calling the Tusayan Ranger District at (928) 638-2443. Individual (family) sites at all of the campgrounds are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

City thanked for area improvement

To the editor:

I would like to acknowledge and thank the city of Williams Street Department for the awesome job they did on North Fifth Street. As a resident of this street, I, for one, am very appreciative.

Thanks, crew. You did a great job!

Blood drive nets goal of 32 units

To the editor:

A huge thank you to everyone who gave blood at the United Blood Services blood drive last week. It was considered a very successful drive since the goal of 32 units was met.

Apologies to those few who were inconvenienced by the less-than-timely waiting periods, and thank you very much to those who left and came back to ensure their blood was available for the many patients in need. Thank you to the Forest Service employees for providing a great facility in which to hold the drive, the delicious cookies and juice, and for helping during the drive in my absence.

Mark your calendars for the next drive, which will be held Aug. 17. It’ll be a wonderful time with all the food, fun and excitement of a birthday party! The only gift you’ll be bringing to this party comes from within.
