Winter/spring sports awards part two — the boys<br>

After an introduction by Head Coach John Reilly, Coach Ken Edes stood to present Vikings JV basketball awards. As with the Lady Vikes teams, each player at least received a certificate of recognition, then some were given extra awards for outstanding skill.

For JV basketball, freshman Abel Valdez received the MVP award, Most Improved went to sophomore Wesley Scruggs, and sophomore Vikesh Patel got the Viking Spirit award for most spirited player.

On the varsity side, senior Ryan Barnes was voted in for MVP and was selected for First Team All Region, senior Brandon Jackson took home the award for Most Improved, and senior Jamie Rico was given the Most Spirited award. Senior Ryan Muhr, not present at the ceremony, received an All Region Honorable Mention, while junior Kevin Buchanan was selected for First Team All Region. Barnes, Muhr, and Buchanan were also named to the All State Team.

After boys basketball, the Lady Vikings softball team was presented with their awards, then it was on to WHS golf and, finally baseball.

Only three of the five WHS golf team players were present — junior Nick Garibay and sophomores Daniel Mayfield and Mark Ostler. Garibay got the team’s MVP award, Mayfield snagged the spirit award, and Cameron Killinsworth got Most Improved in absentia.

The Vikings JV baseball team didn’t get to play many games this season, going four-and-three, but players received the following awards nonetheless: Most Spirited — Vikesh Patel; Most Improved — freshman Jake MacDonald; and the MVP went to Lorenzo Davalos.

For the Vikings Varsity baseball team, junior Chance Grantham got the Most Spirited award, junior Cesar Davalos went away with Most Improved, and senior Ryan Barnes was voted MVP.

WHS Athletic Director Rick Shipley also took time to recognize students who were selected to play in the upcoming state football, baseball, and softball All Star games. Senior Ben Opperman will play in the June 3 football game, Barnes will play both the football and the June 12 baseball game, as will senior John Kennelly. Senior Jamie Rico will play football with senior Marcelino Ceballos chosen as an alternate. Senior Sylvia Aguilar will represent Williams in the June 3 state All Star softball game.

In addition, Barnes and Aguilar got the Bruce Dent award for being top academic athletes. The Williams Vikings Booster Club awarded them with scholarship money the night before, and at the banquet, the two were presented with commemorative rings.
