Basket program helps families in need<br>
They are seeking information on families in Grand Canyon Village, Tusayan, Valle and throughout the area. Referrals can be made to Ciesielski at 638-2278 or to Dan Tobin at 638-2271.
The annual effort, which originated several years ago from the Grand Canyon Baptist Church, is being run by the local Salvation Army for the second year. New this year is a partnership with the Williams Toys for Tots program to insure that everyone gets presents this year.
“We are so excited and grateful that the Williams Toys for Tots has offered to help us,” Ciesielski said.
As in years past, the annual Angel Tree will be up at the Tusayan McDonald’s. It’s a call to the community to buy gifts for area children, with genders and ages on the tree’s ornaments. However, said Ciesielski, the tree was “iffy” in terms of relying on it alone for enough gifts for all families, which numbered about 35 last year.
The baskets are filled and assembled with support from the Delaware North store. Each contains about $60 worth of food, including all the fixings for a nice Christmas dinner.
Baskets will go out to families on Dec. 20.
Last year, the program sought donations from area service clubs; this year they are turning to businesses. Donations from individuals are always welcome and important to the effort, Ciesielski said.
“Every dollar – every penny – goes to the baskets,” he said. “No percentage goes to us here. All of the money stays within the local confines.”
Donations can be sent to the Salvation Army c/o Dan Tobin, PO Box 45, Grand Canyon, Ariz., 86023.
