American Legion honors Pettit for her work at the cemetery<br>
Fred “Perico” Avila and Linda Pettit display the framed photos Pettit captured during the Memorial Day Service at the Williams Cemetery. The photos can be viewed at the Legion Hall, 425 W. Grant Ave.
“At first, I was afraid to clean gravesites that appeared to be abandoned,” Pettit said.
She decided to clean the graves anyway after reading numerous articles about the local Legion and Avila. This year, she created a cross made of white rocks near the Legion’s site at the white cross.
“The rock cross was a spur of the moment thing. I searched for larger rocks, but could not immediately locate any,” Pettit said.
This year, Pettit attended the Memorial Day Service hosted by the Legion at the cemetery. She brought her camera along and took individual pictures of members of the Honor Guard. Pettit then framed each picture and gave them to the individual Honor Guard members. Pettit also took all of the photos, placed them in one large frame and presented her gift to the local post.
“We appreciate your work at the cemetery and value the photographs you gave us,” Avila told Pettit.
The framed photo will be on display at the Legion Hall, 425 W. Grant Ave.
