Middle-school soccer<br>team wins two, ties one
The Grand Canyon Middle School soccer team got the season off to a good start Saturday by winning two matches and tying a third at Seligman.
The middle-school Phantoms opened against Ash Fork and finished in a scoreless tie. Coaches said the team played strong defensively.
In the second match, Grand Canyon again would not budge on defense and ended up with a 2-0 win over Seligman. Cruz Caballero scored the first goal with an assist from Monique Streit. Miriam Bankston followed with a goal on an assist from Maria Caballero. Casey Gibson got the shutout as goalkeeper.
Grand Canyon was also victorious in the final match, 4-2 over Williams. Ali Towers scored on an assist from Cruz Caballero. Maria Caballero then scored on assist from Gibson. Gibson scored the team’s other two goals.
Gibson and Cruz Caballero shared duties as goalkeeper.
The team was scheduled to open the season the previous week, but those matches were cancelled.
The team’s next action will be Saturday at home. The team is selling raffle tickets in an effort to raise money to purchase sweatshirts.
