Weeleong Ang, 26, and Netalie Tansulin, 24, both of China, were killed along with Jessica Cauley, 23, of Katy, Texas.

The accident appears to be the result of Ang overcorrecting his car after he apparently began to drive on the shoulder. Driving a red 2002 Ford and heading north, Ang crossed the center line and collided with a green 1994 Jeep, driven by Mark Cauley, 26, and heading south.

Mark Cauley, husband of one of the victims, and passenger Frank Cobo, 19, of Houston, were flown from the scene to Flagstaff Medical Center. Both suffered multiple injuries.

Emergency personnel had to extricate two of the accident victims.

All three victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Tusayan Fire Department, Valle-Wood Volunteer Fire Department, Coconino County Sheriff’s Office and Department of Public Safety responded to the scene.

Robbie Evans, fire chief, said the Tusayan Fire Department was called to the accident at 12:15 p.m.

The accident occurred near mile marker 212, which is one mile south of Valle.

All five people were reportedly wearing their seat belts.
