During the period of March 20-28, U.S. Park Rangers at Grand Canyon National Park responded to the following incidents:

Thursday, May 20

o Rangers issued a verbal warning to a man (age not reported) for trespassing at Colter Hall.

o Rangers responded to a report of visitors’ Maswik Lodge door being open upon their return from the cafeteria. No property was missing.

Friday, May 21

o Rangers responded to a report of vandalism at Brown building. A man reported damage to his vehicle.

o Rangers responded to a minor motor-vehicle accident (site not reported) involving Ryan Express and Xanterra buses.

o Brian Hovis, 30, Chandler, was arrested for possession of marijuana. Rangers reported that Hovis was in possession of 4 ounces.

o Rangers responded to a report of public intoxication involving a man who was passed out on a restroom floor in Victor Annex.

o An emergency medical call was taken on the South Kaibab Trail of a 44-year-old man who was thrown from his mule when the trail gave way at or near the top of the "Red and Whites." The man, a mule wrangler-packer for Xanterra Parks and Resorts, was evacuated via patient litter to the Mormon Flats area and then flown to Flagstaff Medical Center.

Saturday, May 22

o An emergency medical call was taken at Grand Canyon Walk-In Clinic of a 50-year-old woman complaining of shortness of breath, tingling sensation in her right arm and mid-sternal pain. The woman was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center.

o An emergency medical call was taken at Kachina Lodge of a 51-year-old man complaining of a migraine headache and continued vomiting. The man refused treatment and went on his own to Grand Canyon Walk-In Clinic.

o Rangers assisted an elderly woman by transporting her from Yavapai Point to Mather Point where her vehicle was parked. The woman had walked to Yavapai Point and could not return because of a medical condition. She refused medical assistance.

o Rangers responded to a report of two men and two juvenile boys throwing rocks and pennies over the edge at Mather Point. The individuals were not located.

o Rangers responded to a report of a fight in progress at Rouzer Hall. No other information provided.

o An emergency medical call was taken (site not reported) of a 24-year-old woman who suffered a ground-level fall. The woman complained of a right wrist injury and refused treatment. She self-transported to Flagstaff Medical Center.

Sunday, May 23

o An emergency medical call was taken (site not reported) of a 78-year-old woman with shortness of breath. The woman, who had a previous heart condition, was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center.

o Rangers assisted Xanterra Fire and Safety officers with the eviction of a former employee out of Victor Hall.

o Rangers responded to a request for assistance from the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office. The occupants of a silver Dodge Stratus left their juvenile son in Valle. The vehicle was located in Mather Campground and the occupants were detained until the arrival of a Sheriff’s Office unit.

o Tyler Fedelchak (age, city of residence not reported) was cited at Mather Campground for minor in possession of alcohol.

o An emergency medical call was taken (site not reported) of a 68-year-old man with shortness of breath. The man was diabetic and had a history of five heart bypass surgeries. No other information provided.

o Rangers responded to an alarm at a National Park Service storage shed. The cause of the alarm was unknown.

o Rangers helped reunite two hikers who were separated. The people were hiking from the South Kaibab Trail to the Bright Angel Trail along the Tonto Trail.

Monday, March 24

o Rangers received property that had been found in Victor Hall. A street sign that had been missing was turned in. It was found in a room vacated by some international employees who have left the park.

o Rangers responded to a report of a "dead person" smell coming from the area of three rooms in Colter Hall. All rooms were contacted and entered and everything was determined to be fine. The smell was coming possibly from a dead rat.

o Travis Store, 20, Grand Canyon, was cited for minor consumption of alcohol. Wallace J. Frank (age not reported), Grand Canyon, was cited for providing alcohol to a minor.

o Ryan Welley and James Yeates (ages, cities of residence not reported) were cited at Mather Campground for possession of marijuana.

Tuesday, March 25

o Rangers took a report from a visitor who either lost or had stolen a compact disc player, CD and bandana from a Yavapai West Lodge room. An investigation was ongoing.

o Rangers issued a verbal warning for disorderly conduct to a man (age not reported) at the Bright Angel Lodge cafeteria.

o Rangers took a report of theft from Thunderbird Lodge. A mirror valued at $100 was taken out of a room. The visitor was from North Carolina and left the area. An investigation was ongoing.

Wednesday, March 26

o Rangers took a report from a visitor involving the theft of his backpack, which included his passport and driver’s license, from a shuttle bus on Hermit Road. The victim, who was an embassy official from Denmark, estimated the items stolen at $100.

o An emergency medical call was taken at Hermit’s Rest of an 11-year-old girl with asthma. No other information provided.

o An emergency medical call was taken (site not reported) of a 27-year-old woman who was feeding squirrels and was bitten. The woman was advised to get a tetanus shot and self-transported to Flagstaff Medical Center.

o Rangers responded to a report of a 50-year-old man in distress on the Tanner Trail. The initial report indicated the hiker had an altered level of consciousness. Rangers responded down the trail and assisted the man to the rim. The man was flown to Flagstaff Medical Center.

o Rangers responded to a request for assistance from Zion National Park for a short-haul rescue on Angel’s Landing. The victim was rescued via short haul operation and transported to the St. George, Utah, hospital.

Thursday, March 27

o Shift briefing information not available.

Friday, March 28

o Emergency personnel responded to a dumpster fire in the back of Rouzer Hall. The fire was extinguished.

o An emergency medical call was taken near Kolb Studio of a 51-year-old woman who slipped and suffered knee abrasions. The woman’s knee was cleaned and bandaged and she refused further assistance.

o Rangers responded to a general alarm at the El Tovar Hotel. The basement was filled with smoke and the building was evacuated. Officials determined the smoke was caused by a broken compressor. Firefighters ventilated the basement.

o An emergency medical call was taken (site not reported) of a male (age not reported) with a wrist laceration. The person refused treatment.

o Rangers responded to a report of trespassing and under the influence of alcohol involving a man (age not reported) from Flagstaff who was intoxicated and sleeping in the Victor Hall television room. The man had no accommodations and was given a sleeping bag and put in an emergency site for the night.
