Playing on the home field for the first time this season on Friday, Grand Canyon fell to the Wildcats in a twinbill by scores of 20-0 and 25-4. The next day, the Phantoms lost games to Seligman, 15-5 and 14-4.

"I knew it would be a touch-and-go season because we had no field to practice on," GCHS coach Andrew Aldaz said. "They played competitively and didn’t seem to give up. They played their hearts out."

Joseph City put on a power display in Friday’s games. The Wildcats hit eight home runs in the doubleheader, including three consecutive shots over the fence in the second inning of game two.

Grand Canyon had just one baserunner in the first game, a walk by Shane Cox. In the nightcap, Cox had a two-RBI double.

Heading into Saturday’s games, Grand Canyon had a chance to force a three-way tie for second place in the conference with a sweep over Seligman. But the Antelopes were too strong and won twice on the 10-run mercy rule.

In the first game, Miles Hunter, Joe Wilkerson and David Robinson each had two hits. Robinson collected a double and triple. Cox, Matt Hender and Travis Schmidt had doubles. John Gabaldon tripled.

Miles Hunter had a big second game with a home run and double. The home run came in the third inning with two outs and nobody on. Danny Vincent and Robinson also had two-baggers. Cox, Robinson and Miles Hunter each had two hits.

Grand Canyon ends the season with a 2-6 record in the region, 2-12 overall.

The Phantoms will be losing six seniors off the team — Gabaldon, Wilkerson, Hender, Cox, Schmidt and Ed Hazlett.
