GCMS soccer team<br>splits first 2 matches

The Grand Canyon Middle School soccer team dropped its season-opener to Ash Fork but then came back to defeat Williams in action on Saturday.

In the first game, Ash Fork took a 2-0 victory. Grand Canyon coach Terry Tobin said the Phantoms appeared to be nervous, coming out slow to start the first half.

Tobin said the Grand Canyon defense began to pick things up in the second half. Ash Fork outnumbered the Phantoms, 10-9, when it came to players on the field. Later when a Grand Canyon player became sick, Ash Fork had a 10-8 advantage.

Yolanda Bitsui had a standout game at goalie with four saves. Cruz Caballero also did well at goalie in his one quarter of action there.

In the next game, Grand Canyon downed Williams, 1-0. The lone goal came on a penalty kick by Caballero.

Tobin said the Phantom defense was instrumental in the victory. Bitsui had three saves at goalie.

The season was supposed to start on Sept. 7 in Ash Fork, but after heavy rainstorms, the school’s field was unplayable.

Grand Canyon will host matches on Saturday at home with action slated for a 9 a.m. start. Ash Fork, Seligman and Williams are scheduled to compete. Northland Prep has also been invited.

Parks Maine was also on the schedule, but GCMS athletic director Matt Yost said that school is not fielding a soccer team this year.
