Phantom basketball teams<br>begin preparations for season

The Grand Canyon High School boys and girls basketball teams opened preseason drills.

Grand Canyon boys coach Dan Lopez said he had 27 signed up for the team. Lopez has enough freshmen signed up that he’s going to try to arrange a few games for them.

Girls coach Andrew Aldaz had more than 20 girls signed up but some of those are still involved with volleyball.

The boys are scheduled to open the regular season on Nov. 16 at Northland Prep in Flagstaff. Game time is set for 5 p.m.

The Phantoms boys and girls teams will then host Williams on Dec. 3 at home. Those will be varsity games only.

Both the boys and girls will participate again this year in the Orange & Black Tournament in Williams. Vikings athletic director Rick Shipley expanded this year’s tournament to include 16 boys teams and 16 girls teams.

One of the largest tournaments in the state, games will be played in both Williams and Ash Fork.

The first home date that will include junior-varsity action will be Dec. 13 when Fredonia visits. There will also be home games on Dec. 20 when Seligman comes to the Phantom gymnasium.
