Scholarship ceremony awards $86,368
$16,800 in local scholarships awarded
Anyone who attended the Williams High School annual scholarship awards ceremony May 14, would have seen three faces that stood out from the crowd — Amy Christman, Holly Wells and Carl Nelson.
Nelson took home nine awards totaling $37,096, Wells received eight awards totaling $27,896. Both are this year’s valedictorians. Christman walked with eight awards and $4,100.
A total of $86,368 was given away and $16,800 was from local groups and organizations.
A total of 20 different groups gave away scholarships.
Three in-state colleges — Arizona State University, University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University have awarded $69,568 in scholarships to local seniors. Most of these scholarships are awarded to students in the top of their class and are renewed yearly based on students maintaining a certain grade point average.
During the ceremony one outstanding junior was recognized — Kate Holmes. ASU gave Holmes the Medallion of Merit Award and Scholarship.
“The annual medallion of merit award recognizes outstanding high school juniors who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership and service,” said Bud Parenteau, board member.
Holmes took home a $1,000 scholarship, which is renewable for three years.
