DNPS has fun
with Earth Day
GC VILLAGE — Delaware North Parks Services, nationally recognized for its GreenPath program, will again be involved with Earth Day activities with Grand Canyon School this year.

Delaware North’s Jennifer Premoshis said community members will see the results of that relationship later this month. On Earth Day, April 22, Canyon Village Marketplace employees will be distributing special grocery bags to its customers.

The grocery bags were decorated by K-6 students with various types of environmental-friendly drawings and messages. Called the "Earth Day Groceries Project," the activity has been featured in a couple of nationwide magazines and has been an annual favorite with thousands of teachers and students around the world.

Next week, DNPS employees will head down to the school to award first- and second-place prizes by grade, along with a grand-prize winner.

Prior to the distribution of the bags on April 22, locals will be able to see the students’ work in special displays at the store.

"I encourage people to come on the 22nd and use the bags," Premoshis said. "Come and look at the bags prior to that. They'll be out sometime this week."

Another activity Premoshis and others at the store are excited about is this year’s Earth Day T-shirt design contest. This project involves students in grades 7-12 and prizes will be awarded to the top three entries.

Besides a pizza party for 12, the winning student will see his or her T-shirt design worn by students, faculty and DNPS employees.

Premoshis said the designs were judged by DNPS staff in the areas of originality, neatness, balance of lettering and of course, the design itself. Employees at all three DNPS stores will wear the T-shirts on Earth Day.

The school has other Earth Day activities planned for middle-school students on April 23, and elementary and high-school students on April 25.
