Ash Fork spikers edge<br>GCMS in volleyball
GC VILLAGE — The Grand Canyon Middle School volleyball team put up quite the fight against Ash Fork Saturday during action on the home court.
The middle-school A-team Phantoms stunned Ash Fork in the first game of the match, 15-3. After Ash Fork came back to win the second game, 15-10, the two schools played down to the wire in the third game. The Spartans had more at the end to win the game, 16-14, and take the match.
"They sure worked hard in that game," GCMS coach DeAnn Ross said. "I was sure proud of them. It’s the best I’ve seen them play. They were just really into it and I could tell they had a lot of energy and were working as a team."
Grand Canyon did well at the service line with few misses and turned in an exceptional performance at the net. Ross lauded the efforts of Melissa Skeet who was "right there on everything" and Kecia Torivio, who had a couple of kill spikes.
"There was some really good bumping from the rest of the team," Ross added. "And their serve receives have improved."
In the final match of the day, Williams took a 15-11, 15-6 win over Grand Canyon. In the first game of the match, the Phantoms scored 10 straight points in one stretch and led 10-5 behind strong serving. But Williams countered by scoring 10 of the next 11 points.
In the second game of the match, Williams took advantage of GCMS serving problems to pull away late.
In B-team action from Saturday, Ash Fork and Williams took two-game victories over Grand Canyon. Scores of those matches were not available.
Grand Canyon will end the season Saturday with the I-40 Conference Tournament at Ash Fork.
