GC summer basketball<br>boys drop 4 of 5 games
FLAGSTAFF — The Grand Canyon summer boys basketball team lost four of five games a few weeks ago in the second week of a tournament in Flagstaff.
The Phantoms dug a hole against Miami's varsity in a 51-41 setback. Grand Canyon trailed by 23 points early in the second half but rallied to close within three. Coach Dan Lopez said the team "simply ran out of gas" at that point.
Mitch Walker scored 32 for the Phantoms.
In a 53-44 loss to Sinagua varsity, Grand Canyon again fell behind by 28 points. The team then made a furious second-half rally to pull within eight, but couldn't overcome the huge deficit.
We started the game very flat and by the time we picked up the intensity it was too late," Lopez said. "We are the type of team that has to play very hard from tip off to the buzzer otherwise we put ourselves in a hole early in the game and with a limited bench cannot recover from such large deficits."
Mitch Walker scored 10 points with limited playing time. Tempy Walker had 11 and Jason Boyd scored 10.
Grand Canyon then defeated St. Mary's junior varsity, 63-51. St. Mary's was the Class 5A champion last season.
Walker scored 41 points and grabbed 21 rebounds.
On Saturday, Grand Canyon lost to Mayer varsity, 45-33. Mitch Walker scored 26.
The Phantoms then lost to 3A Chino Valley varsity, 67-53. Mitch Walker had 31 points and 17 rebounds. Tempy Walker scored 12 points. Boyd came away with 11 boards.
