Williams girls overwhelm Mayer in 39-point victory

It was over in eight minutes.

The Williams High School girls basketball team didn’t get much of a challenge from overmanned Mayer Saturday in a 58-19 win. The victory provided the girls with some relief after dropping a close one at Sedona earlier in the week, 72-63.

“We were able to work on our offense and defense tonight,” WHS coach Lorenzo Rodriguez said about the win over Mayer. “When we’re on, we’re competitive. Those three girls have to hit double figures.”

Rodriguez was referring to the Lady Viking trio of Lyssa Mulvihill, Beth Harris and Melissa Pettit. Those three score the high majority of points and when they all hit double digits, Williams almost always wins.

For example, those three combined for 45 of the team’s 58 points vs. Mayer. Harris had 19, Pettit 15 and Mulvihill eight, not double figures but pretty good considering her limited time on the court in the blowout.

Back to the Sedona game, Mulvihill had 27, Pettit 14 and Harris three. The balance wasn’t there and the team fell by nine.

The loss to Sedona was a tough one. Williams led with only two minutes left in the game. At that point, the team got into foul trouble, made a few mental mistakes and the Scorpions won.

Saturday night’s game was a track meet. Williams shot out to a 21-0 lead before Mayer could even score. The Wildcats put the first two points on the board with 1:19 left in the first.

In the early stretch, Pettit scored nine points, including four straight free throws after a personal foul and then a technical foul on the Mayer bench.

When the Vikes didn’t get the shot in, a teammate would usually be there for the rebound and put it right back. Mayer never had a chance.

Williams upped its record to 2-2 in the region, 11-9 overall. The girls were scheduled to play Salome Tuesday in a game after deadline.

The girls host Orme Friday and Mogollon this coming Tuesday. Both games tipoff at 5:30 p.m.
