Ida "Belle" Reed, 88, died Sept. 21, 2000 in Williams.

Born Jan. 6, 1912, in Greenwood, Ark., she was the daughter of Jerry Thomas and Mary Margaret Bowdoin.

Mrs. Reed, also known to almost everyone as ‘Grandma Belle,’ came to Arizona as a young woman of 18 and soon met and married her husband, Dude Reed. She was employed as a checker at the Pay ‘n Take It market (later Safeway), then in later years as the clothing buyer for Babbitts’ Department Store.

Along with her husband and the help of their only child, Durward, the Reeds began to build a very successful cattle ranch that to this day is still in operation. Mrs. Reed was not only the partner and head cook for all the cowboys, she was friend, mother and grandmother to many a young man that came along to help out. When there wasn’t a roundup, a gathering or shipping to be in charge of, she spent many years of volunteer work with numerous organizations, such as, the Hospital Auxiliary, Little League and Campfire Girls.

Mrs. Reed was one of the main instigators in the building of the first swimming pool in Williams, built out of all volunteer labor and donations. Her unconditional and deep love for children inspired her to spend countless hours working to see that they got the best of everything she could give them.

She was an avid bowler, one of her many passions in life and also enjoyed a good game of poker. There were many night-long poker parties held at her home as she was one of the best cooks and hostesses around.

Mrs. Reed belonged to the Friendship Club in town, but didn’t restrict her friendship to club members. She was a devoted friend to everyone she met.

Because of her love for children she became "Grandma Belle" to several generations and touched their lives in so many ways it is impossible to count them all.

Mrs. Reed was preceded in death by her husband Durward "Dude" Reed.

She is survived by her son Durward Reed of Williams; one brother, Damon Bowdoin of Port Orchard Wash.; one sister, Sibyl Rust of Gig Harbor Wash.; three grandchildren, Bonnie Hart of Lakeside, Glen Reed of Bremerton Wash., and Suelynn Eddy of Williams; great-grandchildren, Kristy Trussell of Palm Harbor Fla., Angie Trussell of Redmond Ore., Glen Reed Jr., and Travis Reed both of Bremerton, and Stefanie and Justin Eddy of Williams; and also numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at the Quality Inn Mountain Ranch Resort at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 27. A reception will be held at 2 p.m. at the home of Gary and Suelynn Eddy, 1026 W. Sheridan Ave.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Belle and Dude Reed Memorial Scholarship Fund at The Stockmen’s Bank in Williams (Acct. no. 7060023814).
