School tax credit

deadline Dec. 31

GC VILLAGE — Time is running out for residents to take advantage of the Arizona school tax credit program.

Arizonans can contribute up to $250 to public schools for extracurricular activities and then deduct that amount directly from their state income taxes through a tax credit.

The Grand Canyon School District received $14,680 over the first three years through the tax credit — $5,300 in 1998, $5,100 in 1999 and $4,280 in 2000.

Payments must be received by the school by the end of the year, but officials recommend contributors act earlier. The office will be open on Dec. 26-27. Contributions can be accepted if postmarked by Dec. 31.

The tax credit reduces a household’s taxes up to the limit of their liability. Contributors with liability less than $250 can only get credit up to that amount.

Credits are limited to $250 per individual or married taxpayers filing jointly. The credits are not available to businesses.

The $250 limit is higher than the first three years when $200 was the limit.

The contributor must designate where they want the money to go. First, contributors choose whether the money goes to elementary or high school. Then one of six activities can be selected — drama, athletics, music, art, field trips or clubs. Contributors can split the donation up between different categories, such as $150 toward athletics and $100 toward field trips.

For more information or to obtain a form, visit the district office or call 638-2461.
