During the period of Aug. 14-18, U.S. Park Rangers at Grand Canyon National Park responded to the following incidents:

Tuesday, Aug. 14

o An emergency medical call was taken at Kachina Lodge of a 69-year-old woman in respiratory distress. The woman was transported to Grand Canyon Walk-In Clinic where she was later pronounced dead.

o Rangers took a report of license plate theft from a 39-year-old California man. The vehicle was parked at Yavapai Lodge when the alleged theft took place.

o An emergency medical call was taken on the North Kaibab Trail of a 32-year-old man who suffered a seizure at the Supai tunnel. The man was flown out and transported to Grand Canyon Walk-In Clinic.

Wednesday, Aug. 15

o Rangers responded to two separate calls of barking dogs at Pinon Park. There was no answer at either residence in attempts to contact the owners.

o Rangers responded to several reports of parking problems at Yavapai Point and Bright Angel Lodge. Rangers reported that a big part of the problem was tour buses double-parking in the roadways and most of the time, there were no cars in those spots, just more buses than parking spaces.

o An emergency medical was taken at the Yavapai Cafe of a 13-year-old girl with a fainting episode. The girl was transported to Grand Canyon Walk-In Clinic.

o An emergency medical call was taken at Yavapai Lodge of a 44-year-old woman who cut her hand. The woman was transported to Grand Canyon Walk-In Clinic.

o Rangers took a missing person report from an Amfac employee who said his wife did not return home from work. Rangers located the woman within 15 minutes of receiving the call. The wife said that her husband had forgotten it was her day off and that she had gone to Flagstaff for the day.

o Rangers responded to a report at Maswik Lodge guests waking up and finding a 10-year-old boy with a pillow sleeping in the middle of their room. The child had entered the room while they slept. They watched the sleep-walking child stand up and leave their room. After a quick search, the boy was found sleeping in the room next door.

o An emergency medical call was taken at Phantom Ranch of a female hiker (age not reported) with cardiac-related problems. After being treated at Phantom Ranch, the woman was flown out and transported to Grand Canyon Walk-In Clinic.

Thursday, Aug. 16

o Two visitors from England who entered the park on rented bicycles were given verbal warnings for not stopping to pay the entrance fee. Rangers then followed up with the manager at a Tusayan hotel to ensure proper information is given to those who rent bikes.

o A 16-year-old Massachusetts youth (sex not reported) was cited for possession of marijuana at Canyon View Marketplace.

o An emergency medical call was taken at Bright Angel Lodge of a 27-year-old Chinese visitor (sex not reported) who was stung by a bee on the right thumb. The visitor was transported to Grand Canyon Walk-In Clinic.

o Rangers responded to a report of visitors knocking down portions of a construction fence in an effort to reunite a mother deer with her fawns. Rangers were unable to locate anyone.

o An emergency medical call was taken at the back door of Grand Canyon Walk-In Clinic of a 32-year-old woman choking and having difficulty breathing. The woman, who had a severely agitated throat as a result of earlier choking on a cookie, was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center.

o An emergency medical call was taken at Bright Angel Cabins of a 54-year-old woman suffering from severe hyponatremia. The woman was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center via Guardian Air.

Friday, Aug. 17

o An emergency medical call was taken at Maricopa Point of a 30-year-old woman who fainted. The woman was transported to Grand Canyon Walk-In Clinic.

o An emergency medical call was taken (site not reported) of an 11-year-old boy who suffered a ground-level fall, landing on his head. The boy was taken to Grand Canyon Walk-In Clinic.

o Rangers responded to a request for assistance from the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office for a combative intoxicated male at Trailer Village in Tusayan. The man, who was by rangers only as being from Georgia, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and transported to the county jail.

o Rangers responded to a request for assistance from the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Public Safety in the pursuit of a vehicle westbound on U.S. Highway 180 toward Valle. The departments requested a set of stopsticks. A unit responded along with a CCSO unit out of Tusayan. However while en route, units were notified that the subjects had been stopped outside Valle with a first set of stop sticks.

o A Florida couple (names not reported) were cited for possession of a controlled substance (marijuana) and minor in possession of alcohol after rangers responded to Mather Campground for an open ground fire. The couple was given a warning for the open ground fire.

o Rangers reported several vehicles were cited for speeding along Desert View Drive just east of the South Kaibab Trail turnoff. The trailhead had been congested since the closure of Bright Angel Trail.

o An emergency medical call was taken at Phantom Ranch of a 48-year-old woman with heat-related illness. The woman was flown out and transported to Grand Canyon Walk-In Clinic.

o An emergency medical call was taken at Mormon Flat of a 73-year-old man with heat-related illness. The man was flown out and transported to Grand Canyon Walk-In Clinic.

o An emergency medical call was taken (site not reported) of a 49-year-old man with heat-related illness. The man hiked out with a Preventative Search and Rescue ranger.

Saturday, Aug. 18

o An emergency medical call was taken at Mather Point of a 20-year-old woman from Japan who had a near-fainting episode. The woman refused treatment.

o Rangers responded to a report of an audible alarm at a Barry Hance Circle residence. The alarm was found to be a trouble alarm.

o Rangers took a theft report of a stolen trailer hitch from a California vehicle at Yavapai East. The investigation was continuing.

o Rangers responded to reports from both Desert View and Grand Canyon Village of a car fire just west of Desert View Point. The entire length of Desert View Drive was checked with negative results. The Desert View ranger later learned that a car had blown its radiator.

o A 20-year-old was issued verbal warnings for under the influence of alcohol and minor consumption of alcohol after being found passed out inside an unsecured residence. Initially, the man said he did not know who lived at the residence, adding that he entered the trailer and passed out on the floor. The man later said his mother lived there, a claim that was later verified.
