City OK's $306,000 more for well
Drillers got the nod Monday to ream out Dogtown Well No. 2’s borehole to 17 1/2 inches.
At the special meeting called to discuss a change order to the well contract, Williams City Council gave unanimous approval to an additional $306,000 to cover what it will cost United Drilling to increase the borehole from its current 8 5/8 inch diameter.
Dennis Dalbeck, city manager, explained why the change is needed.
"On Sept. 29 the drillers were at 3,150 feet and preparing to run 8-inch casing down the hole," Dalbeck said. "After hitting intrusions or fracturing in the borehole, they had to withdraw the casing."
After learning about the problems with fractures, council voted to increase the hole’s diameter.
"Council decided to ream the hole to a larger size, which will allow a 13 3/8 inch casing to be installed," Dalbeck said. "It also allows for more clearance."
"The discussions with the hydrologist indicate this fracture is a very good sign for a greater volume of water."......................
Dalbeck said Dogtown Well No. 1 is currently producing 230 gallons per minute.
"If successful in getting this 13 3/8 casing to the Red Wall limestone, we might expect a greater production rate than Dogtown No. 1," he said. "In any event, within the next two weeks, we should have a better feel for the potential of the well."
Councilmembers Dale Perkins and Cary Price were absent from the meeting.
